Use the depth and spacing of the dips a transiting planet makes in the light curve to find its size and orbital period, and the radial velocity of the star's absorption lines swinging between blueshift and redshift to find its mass. Change the star's surface temperature to watch the habitable zone move, then fit a model to observed data to judge whether liquid water could exist on the planet.
